In a normal year, we would spend this week finalizing preparations for the annual Mizzou Pest Management Field Day. COVID has prevented us from hosting the annual meeting, however, we still want to share current, relevant research and introduce the newest graduate students in the program. Therefore, we will launch a video series in the coming weeks. We aim to feature one 3- to 5-minute video per week, and will share the videos through the IPM newsletter and our social media sites: Facebook (Mizzou Weed Science) and Twitter (@ShowMeWeeds). Some topics we plan to highlight include:

  • Recent dicamba analyses
  • Evaluations of chemical programs in corn and soybean
  • Preliminary thoughts on weed electrocution as a non-chemical control option

We are in year one of testing weed electrocution. Preliminary thoughts will be shared in the field day video series.

  • SeedTerminator research data from 2019

Results from year one of Seed Terminator evaluation will be presented.

  • Integration of cereal rye cover crop with at-harvest weed seed destruction techniques
  • Evaluation of fall-seeded cereal rye seeding rates on early-season waterhemp emergence in soybean

Senior research associate Delbert Knerr is spraying an industry-sponsored trial. Typically these trials are signed for public viewing. This year we plan to highlight some new corn and soybean treatments via video.

This approach will not allow us to have the discussion that typically follows field day presentations; however, Facebook and Twitter provide a virtual place for viewers to leave questions pertaining to the videos. Hopefully, in 2021 we will be able to return to the standard format of meeting at Bradford Research Center and having in-person discussions.
