Taking an environmentally sensitive approach to pest management
If there is one good feature of waterhemp, it may be that female plants typically retain greater than 90% of seed on seedheads at harvest. Such high retention of seed at harvest is essential for harvest weed seed destruction techniques to be effective. In this video, graduate student Travis Winans highlights research being conducted with the Seed Terminator, which uses hammer mill technology to pulverize weed seed. Travis summarizes ongoing research that entails quantifying the amount of weed seed rendered unviable and analyzing combine performance. The work presented here is possible due to partnerships with Seed Terminator, Crown Implement, Case IH, United Soybean and Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council.
