Spotted Wing Drosophila

Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, is a serious invasive fly that attacks small fruit crops, some stone fruits (cherry, nectarine, peach), and wild hosts (including pokeweed, autumn olive, crabapple, nightshade, Amur honeysuckle, and wild grape). Raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and grapes are at the greatest risk.

So far no economic thresholds for SWD have been developed, so several universities are currently recommending a conservative approach in which capture of one or more SWD on a given farm triggers insecticide application if berries are at a susceptible stage. Protection of fruit needs to take place through to harvest using registered insecticides.
