Sango-kaku

Japanese maples are a species of deciduous shrubs or small trees that can grow 3 to 30 feet tall. Varieties vary for form, color, leaf type, size, and preferred growing conditions. Sango-kaku is one of the varieties displayed in our garden. In Japan, the name 'Sango-kaku' means 'coral-painted'. This variety was given its name because the bark on new twigs is bright coral red. It is an upright-growing tree that tends to take on a vase shape as it matures. Sango-kaku foliage turns a yellow-golden color in the fall and is in high demand because of its unique coloring.
