Red Dragon

Japanese maples are a species of deciduous shrubs or small trees that can grow 3 to 30 feet tall. Varieties vary for form, color, leaf type, size, and preferred growing conditions. Red Dragon is one of the varieties displayed in our garden. It was developed in New Zealand and brought to the U.S. in 1990. Red Dragon is a dwarf type, so it will grow only a few feet high. This type of Japanese maple has lace leaves in a weeping shape. Red dragon needs some protection from cold wind and summer droughts. Because it keeps its deep red color better than most varieties, it is a popular choice for small gardens or containers.
