Harry Lauder's Walking Stick Filbert

Also known as corkscrew hazelnut, Harry Lauder's walking stick is a filbert cultivar native to Europe. It is a deciduous, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub that can reach 8 to 10 feet at maturity. Though it is known as a hazelnut shrub, this variety does not produce fruit. The walking stick shrub has twisting, contorted branches. It was named after a Scottish music hall performer, Harry Lauder, who had a trademark "twisted" walking stick. After the leaves drop in the fall, the branches become quite noticeable and provide winter interest.
