Boxwood is a slow-growing evergreen species. There are more than 365 different varieties of boxwood. Boxwood plants can be grown as hedges or pruned and trained into almost any shape. This is called topiary. The wood has a fine grain and a high density making it ideal for fine wood carvings like chess pieces. It also is a common material used to make parts for various stringed instruments.
