Japanese Barberry

Japanese barberry is native to Japan. The deciduous shrub grows up to 6 feet tall with a slightly wider spread. Leaves are small and vary in color, from yellow to red. Pale yellow flowers hanging in rows along the underside of branches appear in mid-spring. Later, red berries — each containing a single seed — replace the elegant little flowers. Current studies are focusing on the relationship between Japanese barberry and an increase in the amount of Lyme disease-carrying ticks.
