Tiger Beetle

Tiger beetles are very aggressive and speedy insects. These quick insects can run at a speed of 5.6 miles per hour. In addition to their fast running, tiger beetles are agile fliers. Adults have prominent mouthparts, large eyes, and long spindly legs. Some can be completely black, but others have bright stripe-like markings along their abdomen. Adults consume spiders, insects, and even small crustaceans. Females lay one egg at a time under the soil surface. When the larva hatches, it burrows into the soil where it matures into an adult. Larva trap their prey by waiting at the top of their tunnel until prey walks past, it then flips backwards to catch its dinner.
