Boxelder Bug

Boxelder bugs are commonly found on boxelder maple trees. Adult boxelder bugs are black with red and orange markings. Mature adults have wings that fold nicely on their backs while immature boxelder bugs do not have wings. When these insects are found on trees or plants, they will consume any soft tissue they can reach. Adult insects lay their eggs on trees in the summer. When eggs hatch, bright red larva feed on sap and suck the fluid from leaves with their beaks. They then mature and overwinter as adults.
